Fire Chief Search
Preliminary Screening Committee. The Board of Selectmen voted on December 5, 2011 to initiate a search process to fill the position of Fire Chief for the Littleton Fire Department on a permanent basis, first by inviting applications to serve on a preliminary screening committee to be appointed by the Selectmen in January 2012.
On January 9, 2012, the Board of Selectmen voted to make the following appointments to the fire chief preliminary screening committee: Selectmen James Karr and Joseph Knox; Thomas Rauker; Police Chief John Kelly; Littleton Fire Department member James Cahill; Westford Fire Chief Richard Rochon; Boxborough Fire Chief Randolph White; and Town Administrator Keith Bergman.
A particular focus for the screening committee as a whole would be to do outreach to the Littleton Fire Department’s permanent staff and volunteers, as well as to the community at large, to help determine what particular strengths and skills would be most important for the new Littleton Fire Chief to possess.
The Town is also inviting qualified consultants to submit proposals for an assessment center, which may be employed in the search process.
Fire Chief Transition. After six years of service to the Town of Littleton, Fire Chief Stephen E. Carter has resigned effective December 28, 2011, in order to begin his new duties as Fire Chief for the Lincoln (MA) Fire Department. The Board of Selectmen has designated Littleton Fire Captain A. Steele McCurdy as Acting Fire Chief, effective December 28, 2011. The Board of Selectmen is the appointing authority for the Fire Chief, pursuant to MGL C.48, §§42, 43, 44-- the so-called “strong chief” statute accepted by Article 8 of the October 18, 2004 Special Town Meeting. Applications are not yet being accepted for the permanent position of Fire Chief.
