TRANSFER STATION ; PAY-AS-YOU-THROW: The Board of Selectmen held a public hearing on July 12, 2010 and adopted fees and regulations to implement Pay-As-You-Throw Solid Waste Disposal. New stickers will be available beginning on September 2, 2010, at the Littleton Transfer Station, Spectacle Pond Road. The new fees and regulations will take effect on October 1, 2010. REFLECTIVE LINE PAINTING BID: The bid for Reflective Line Painting 8/18/10-4 has been awarded to Poirier Guidelines of Athol, MA at a price of $6,153.74. There were two other bids received, Hi-way Safety Systems in the amount of $6,817.47 and Markings Inc. in the amount of $7,486.06.
ROADWAY IMPROVEMENT PLAN: To address the condition of local roads in Littleton, the Board of Selectmen voted on March 10, 2008 to
support an $8-million roadway improvement plan, which would be funded inside the property tax levy limit, without any overrides of Proposition 2 1/2. Read more.
$4.2-Million in TIP Funding for Goldsmith Street. On June 26, 2008, the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)'s Transportation Planning and Programming Committee formally adopted amendments to the Federal Fiscal Year 2008 TIP (Transportation Improvement Plan) which includes $4.2-million for Goldsmith Street, Littleton. The Committee had given initial approval at its meeting on May 22, 2008, which then triggered a required 30-day public comment period. With the action on June 26th, that funding is officially in place. The project consists of improvements to Goldsmith Street from the intersection with Route 2A/110 to the intersection with Shaker Lane, a distance of approximately 1.45 miles. Sidewalk and landscaping improvements will also be provided. The total project cost is $5.2-million, of which $1-million will be paid by the Town through the funds unanimously approved by the May 5, 2008 Special Town Meeting. The project has been put out to bid by the Massachusetts Highway Department. See bid documents (large PDF file - 17 MB). The projected project start date is the Spring of 2009.
STATE ROADS IN LITTLETON: The major highways in Littleton (Routes 119, 2A, 110, 495, 2) and Powers Road are under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts Highway Department. Any questions or concerns regarding these roads should be directed to the District 3 Office of the Massachusetts Highway Department, 508-929-3800.

The Highway Department provides maintenance and improvements to approximately 62 miles of Town roads; operates the Transfer Station located on Spectacle Pond Road, administers contracts for the disposal of solid wastes, maintains approximately 62 acres of municipal recreational facilities and public grounds; performs public shade tree removals, trimming and planting (Highway Superintendent also serves as Tree Warden); and maintains the Department's equipment to accomplish the assigned tasks.
The Highway Department consists of twelve (12) full-time employees; two (2) part-time Transfer Station Operators and summer help. The Department has at its disposal approximately 50 major pieces of equipment with attachments (etc.) with a value of $2 million to accomplish its work. The amount of equipment used by the Highway Department is a result of the variety of types of work undertaken.
