On December 11, 2017, Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito announced a comprehensive new initiative to substantially increase housing production across the Commonwealth. The Administration's Housing Choice Initiative creates a new system of incentives and rewards for municipalities that deliver sustainable housing growth; creates a new technical assistance toolbox, to empower cities and towns to plan for new housing production; and proposes legislative changes, through An Act to Promote Housing Choices, to deliver smart, effective zoning at the local level. Littleton's housing efforts were featured, and Town Administrator Keith Bergman delivered remarks at the event. On December 18, 2017, the Littleton Board of Selectmen unanimously voted to authorize submission of the Town of Littleton's application to the Baker/Polito Administration for designation as a "Housing Choice" community. With 10.8% housing growth since 2010, Littleton would qualify under Category Number 1 "High Production" (over 5% in the last five years). Littleton has already adopted six of the nine "best practices" of the Housing Choice program.
